Inflow & Infiltration (I&I) is usually the number one concern when addressing wastewater infrastructure condition assessment. Hundreds of Sewer Evaluation Studies have confirmed the reality that 80% of the I&I is located within 20% of the collection grid. This fact alone establishes the need for a micro detection method capable of pinpointing I&I to within a pair of adjoining manholes.

The development of a low-cost, technologically advanced smart sensor became the key to finally having the ability to create an intelligent wastewater infrastructure network. It has always been known that 20% of the conveyance system is responsible for 80% of the problems. The only way for one to locate and manage this 20% is by having the ability to install within the infrastructure in question a large enough quantity of ‘smart’ sensors having the capability to consistently collect enough data so as to create an efficiently functioning ‘intelligent grid’.

itracking® smart sensor technology substantially increases the number of measurement points within the area under investigation. This is key to gaining greater measurement resolution, which in turn, leads to a much higher rate of success in locating problematic sources of I&I. Micro detection of I&I down to a pair of adjoining manholes brings with it a host of cost-cutting benefits.

In addition to pinpointing the problem:

  • Non-problematic areas are eliminated from further investigation
  • The requirement for night time flow isolation is removed
  • CCTV costs, only required at adjoining manholes, are kept to a minimum
